Clue me in
Yes I'm biased. Week after week, month after month, year after year, decade after decade, without a break, withour respite, endless Windows flaws, exploits, virus, worms, trojans. It never stops. It never WILL stop. And yet whenever I suggest that Windows is an inferior product, I get flamed. fact is, Windows IS an inferior product. However, since it is marketed by a monopoly, and since that monopoly have pushed any and all responsibility for their drop offs onto the user via their mandatory End User Licensing Agreement, this is the landscape of computing in the 21st century, for Joe Public. Patch patch patch patch patch patch the patches on the patches that were patches on the patches patched onto the patches you patched last month/year. It will never stop as long as Windows is based on non-networked, single-user architecture. Yes, Windows is an engineering marvel - it's a marvel that something so inherently unsuitable for networked, multi-user work has been hacked and bodged and patched into service for so long, and at such great cost to the user, for so long.

I have Sophos anti-virus on my work PC, it updates 2 to 4 times EVERY DAY. Which tells me that if I was a home Windows user, not covered by a corporate anti-virus policy, every day I would be susceptible to another 2 to 4 new exploits. The Windows party faithful seem unable to take on board the fact that in no other domain of anyone's daily life, would such sloppy, shoddy, unfit-for-purpose engineering be tolerated.

Unfortunately for the un-biased view, Microsoft spend millions of $$$ on PR, on top of the millions they pay for Microsoft-centric studies and reports and deceitful "Get The Facts" campaigns (which the UK advertising Regulatory body made them withdraw). This PR money also pays for shills and astroturfers, who often cover ZDnet boards like a rash. In all this, the voice of the REAL Windows home user is never heard, never. Why? Because they're all waiting for their tech-savvy mate to call round and "have a look at their PC". Because real home users shouldn't have to be "rained" not to use the email program they have already paid for, because "everyone knows" you can't do X, Y or Z with it, without serious risk.

No wonder Linux and Open Source scare Microsoft. They have a license to print money with their monopoly on the shoddy engineering that is Windows. I never expected flying cars by the year 2000, but after 11 years contracting in the IT domain, and after having seen what CAN be done with sound engineering, I must say, I expected more from home computing than critical updates every few weeks.
