You hit the nail on the head!
The problem isn't lack of trained people. The problem is lack of trained people willing to work for peanuts! There are plenty of highly trained, highly skilled, and highly motivated technical people in this country. Many of them are begging for a job. But if you want to pay less than your average Wal-Mart wage, then no, you're not going to find people in this country willing to do the highly technical work you require.

I hear the CEO's (like HP's) saying things like, "The American worker just has to understand that they need to learn to compete. Evolve or die." Ok, great. Any suggestions? WHAT, pray tell, should I return to school and get myself trained to do?

When I graduated with my Computer Science degree in the mid 90's, the labor department was saying how there would be a shortage of programmers through 2020, at least. Computer science was the golden ticket for job security. Now, a few short years later, we learn that its a fake ticket that'll get you nowhere.

Now I honestly want to know, what can get myself trained to do that can't be offshored easily? Some form of enginnering? Sorry, they're firing mechanical, electrical, and computer engineers like crazy. Maybe civic engineering (building roads, bidges, etc)? Good idea, except I have a friend who's a civic engineer and he hasn't found a job in 2 years. How about CEO? Can I get trained as a CEO? Looks like THOSE jobs are quite cushy and in no danger of being offshored!
