Lifetime appointment
You probably don't know that federal judges are appointed for life here in the U.S. The purpose, of course, is to eliminate the control that politicians might otherwise exert over their appointees after the appointment.

This is why some judges appointed to the Supreme Court by conservative presidents have turned out to be on the liberal side of the aisle. Once they pass the Senate confirmation process, they are free to do whatever they want, without fear of political reprisals.

So yes, presidents try to choose judges that agree philosophically with them. But owned? Not at the federal level.
