Why do you sound surprised?
The PDF format has become a standard for distributing documents over the internet. By now, every computer should come with Adobe Reader installed from the factory. Otherwise, too many inexperienced users are totally helpless and unable to read many web pages.

But, it seems that the Linux world seems to be as obtuse and close-minded about this as Microsoft and Apple are. So, it's no surprise that none of the "distros" of Linux come with Adobe Reader included. None of the Windows "distros" include Adobe Reader either! Not sure about Apple, but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't offer the Reader either.

So, I am not surprised about the whole mess. Adobe is doing the right thing to offer its Reader for everyone, including Linux, and even for Palm devices. That others are not supporting it is not surprising.

Why be surprised that there is a Linux version of Adobe Reader? And why be surprised that the Linux people don't support it? After all, it's a selfish world we live in, and everyone supports only their own and nobody else. All the idealism has gone out of the computer world a long time ago. Why make it easy on the consumer? Why support a "third party software" (Adobe Reader), even if it is a de-facto standard?

Such an attitude is reprehensible, ... but, sadly, not surprising.
