Using your metaphor
Linux is built to last, it's foundation comes from Unix which is older than Microsoft itself. How much more solid of a foundation do you need?

As for Linux stability, it will be here for a very long time. Why? Because there will always be those that will contribute with no askance of recompense. Something you have a hard time with. These people building and contributing to Linux are driven by something you will never understand.

You can try to debase is using a false item of value, it's false because in the end it really means nothing to these people. Linux is far more stable than you think. Again... it's foundation.

And many of the pyramids were built with slave labor. As were many of the aqueducts and even many of our own roads and rail systems... they were built by Negro and Chinese slaves. Granted now they are paid for and maintained by free men... but our own history is full of the use of slave labor to accomplish great things.

Does it make it right? No, but it is a fact. The difference between the slaves that built all these structural wonders and the volunteers that build Open Source tools and software including the OS's, is that the ones building roads and buildings... were forced with the threat of death or extreme torture. While the coders do it of thier own free will.

Until you get the concept of doing for the good of all without needing compensation, you will never understand Open Source and you will never see that it cannot be beaten, it cannot be bought and it will not go away.

Again it's foundation is that of Unix, 30+ years of reliable, secure and steady computing. So what is Microsofts exscuse?
