Life's givens.

IT works by accretion. After enough time, a direction that began with a few sones placed has become a solid wall. Tearing it down requires a lot more effort than adding a few more stones or rearranging the segments to bear more weight.

I'd better not accumulate more weight on that metaphor or it will get over-extended. But I think you get the point.

And if I were to get my chance to start a whole new structure, I'd want to build it on the most solid foundation possible. (Okay, but I still like planning uses and assembling bricks.)

That foundation would have two main priorities. First, it would last. Second, I want those who make the bricks and those who assemble them to be paid.

Ancient Egypt was a barter economy, and the people who built the pyramids were paid in food during their agricultural off-season. The pyramids would be a reproach if built with slave labor, or even volunteer labor without recompense.

The people who first built major systems never thought they would have to last 30 or 40 years; that's why they were comfortable with a 2 digit date field. (Though it's one of the great examples of foolish economy.)
Good systems must be based on software that will continue with backward compatibility for a very long time.
And no Linux company, for instance, has that kind of endless stability. In fact, I'm pretty sure Linux itself doesn't.
