If the competition is open source, then the code is known to anyone who wants to use it.

Pretend that Linux, say, is coded without mistakes or vulnerabilities. We know that's not true, but say it is for the sake of argument.

Someone who wanted to produce malware to attack such a system could do so with the cooperation of the user. The observation has been made frequently that malware writers are not bothering to play the patch game. They have too easy a time getting users to infect their machines.

Remember the test for anti-spyware programs? What was it, 1,500 spyware related files installed voluntarily by users of a file-sharing program? And that spyware larded software was among the most popular of its kind.

Any operating system can be locked down. But any user with enough authority can overcome the protections.

I'm arguing that systems have to be protected despite the user. If you accept that point, then Windows has an advantage because its ecosystem is more capable than any other at delivering the software needed for defense. That's because of the number and experience of security companies.
