Specialized malware

From hints in the story, gangs are now targeting specific types of victims. They are not looking for large numbers, or the most damage, but the best way to steal information.

Trojan horses and keyloggers work best when not detected. The public has, as we know, become the primary target rather than the software.

For me, this indicates increased importance for online-based scanning. There's less vulnerability to malign software on the host computer. I notice that Windows update downloads a malware checker from time to time.

Microsoft should be only one of many sources of this type of automatic install and run protection. At a minimum, each anti-virus company should do the same at intervals. They'd be able to identify any machines which reject the software, and at least send a message.

The user has to become only one paticipant in defense.
