What do you suppose would happen if all the visa and mc holders called the companies and requested that their old card be canceled and a new one issued under a different number? This would make all the old numbers worthless, which would protect the merchants. Plus, if someone tried to use one of the numbers you'd know they were a criminal. It would certainly get the attention of the credit card companies. Maybe if 100 mil customers requested new cards, then the credit card companies would be more inclined to do the ethical, decent thing and notify those cardholders who were at risk. Remember folks, it's all about the money. The credit card companies will ALWAYS do what they feel will cost them the least money. Not, what is best, ethical, and decent.
