Everybody worries, they should and should not
Everybody worries and they should and should not. Even if one used cash exclusively, they would still end up in a database. Radio Shack is a prime example, they list a purchaser by zip code and name (that is why I give Radio Shack my real zip code and literally "John Doe"). And if you use either their card (Radio Shack's) or credit card you are doubly blessed. Most card rip off's occur through someone at a brick and mortar establishments, then they do through computer stores. But the only thing with computers is the amount of records that can be accessed in a given time. CheckPoints breach had nothing to do with computer accessed information, it had to do with crooks representing themselves as legit business' to gain access to personal information in print. "You got the money honey, we got the time." That was all CheckPoint interested in (money), not safe guarding personal information.

The main problems that I see with information is:
Security.
no responsibility for protection of that data.
No penalty for not securing it.
Keeping data that they have no right to (such as CardSystems Solutions was not to store the database they had, other then that they were going to sell it later).

It is little wonder that people do not trust these computer processing/database companies. If they screw up, the burden is on the consumer to find out if they are at risk. And if they are they must keep a check on their financial records. I say these companies ought to be held financial responsible for any consequences arising out of their screw up.
