It's the content of course...
I don't get it.. Don't take this the wrong way, cause it's merely a question..

But how is it through partnering that, what goes onto your ISP's mail server, is also linked to Hotmail's mail server?

That doesn't make any sense.

Why would a global ISP make their mail go through hotmail pop3 rather than through their own servers?

In today's climate, you have to give the customer MORE and more value for the money. Remember, technology services are supposed to get cheaper and cheaper as time goes on. So how can you justify charging a customer the same $35.95 a month for cable or DSL when the price should be dropping? You have to give customers more for the money. That means more content, services, etc... It's no longer enough to give the guy a dial-up account with 5 or 10 e-mail address' and maybe 5 to 10 MB of storage on your server.

As crappy as they are, AOL still manages to get and keep 30+ million subscribers - WHY? Because they offer services and content that the other guys didn't. It's nice to launch your browser, go to your ISP's home page and get the latest news, weather and sports and other information that's important to you. It's a convenience factor. You don't have to search CNN, MSNBC, etc... for the latest headlines.

So how do you lure someone away from all that convenience? By providing an equal or greater amount of it. By partnering up with MSN/Hotmail, an ISP doesn't have to go thru the hassle of subscribing to a news service, weather service, etc.. to get content to put on their front page.

Furthermore, by routing the e-mail through MSN/Hotmail, it's also less of a headache on the ISP's part. All of a sudden, they no longer have to maintain mail servers. It's MSN/Hotmail's headache now. They can cut costs by centralizing and outsourcing that service. Many major ISPs have already done it: Verizon has MSN, SBC DSL has Yahoo, etc...

So... By buying a "package" deal from MSN/Hotmail or Yahoo or whoever, your ISP gets content to put on the front door and save themselves money by not having to maintain e-mail and most likely newsgroup/usenet servers. They've freed up a bunch of money and floor space by not having to host a bunch of servers. Now all they need is a few routers at the appropriate junctions to their T3 or OC12 pipeline and maybe a couple of servers for handling log-ins and the like. Of course, this means they no longer need quite as many admins and IT people too. More savings.

Follow the money. It'll always get to the truth.
