This is indeed an intresting business oppurtunity and a technical challenge....

The challenge with IP tapping , as you well stated, is that it is difficult to scale to address the high rates in these broadband networks. It requires technology that is able to pick-up the appropriate network packets of the voice-call and 'record' only them. This requires a device which is intelligent enough to track the acutal application signaling going on in the link at extremly high rates.


Also it is intresting to note that the requirement should be made on the infrastructure of the broadband service/access providers rather than that of the VoIP providers -- some of them simply cannot do this. A good example is Skype, which is decentralized by nature and there is no way the technology can facilitate this by iteself.

The broadband access provider (DSL, Cable) is the one that can comply with this, which is also good for the VoIP service provider as it allows them to focus on building their service offering.

There are companies that have technology that can address this but very few with the right performance to address the throughputs in these environmnets
