"Just encrypt your VoIP, and they cannot do anything about it. Assuming, of course, that you use Open Source software."
First of all, it ain't that easy.
Yes it is. Grab a copy of the ogg speex voice compressor, a copy of the AES encryptor, a networking library, and there you are!
I could do it in two or three days. Totally secure voice communication.
Second, the FBI will be able to crack the encryption eventually... at least by the time the case goes to court.
Nope.
Third, there will be at most, a dozen different encryption techniques used. How long do you think those will last? A few months? Get real, they'll be cracked or admitted or spyed or whatever.
Please tell us why DES encryption - invented in the 1970s! - hasn't been broken yet. All the top crptographers of the world have been working on it for 30-odd years and so far have came up with nothing. Zilch. It's withstood every effort.
nb. Yes, you can break single DES these days by simply trying every possible key, but not triple DES, not even close. Put simply, even if you could build a computer big enough to crack it in a reasonable time (which you can't) you certainly couldn't build a power station big enough to power it.
That's why the feds have given up on export control of encryption. It's pointless, the cat is out of the bag, and it usually isn't the weak link in the chain. The weak link is the operators - 60% of passwords in the world are words from the dictionary or the name of your pet/girlfriend. It's much easier to crack the password than the encryption.
Voice communications don't need a password though.... just a session key which can be machine-generated for extra security. - Posted by: Jomo_z Posted on: 01/08/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
