Bad Idea: Who checks that proprietary network protocol?
If you use some proprietary network protocol, who can tell if it is safe?
Maybe some bad programmer made a few mistakes because she has a holliday.
Or the company hired to code it is more intersted in making a good buck that in delivering a good protocol?
BAD IDEA!

The only resoanable way to go IMHO:

- use current state of the art encryption.
(Open Source of course so we can all check if is it is any good)

- combined with proven solid OS, like abovementioned Solaris or AS400

Of course you need a LOT of security INSIDE the companies that are involved too.
It is not nice, but if you DO NOT treat all employees as potiential criminals, it is just a matter of time before a real one shows up...

And let us not forget that this company was NOT following the rules set.
They should be procecuted heavily.

Besides that: The whole creditcardsystem is one big securityhole and should be replaced by something more sensible, like a pincodesystem.
