R.I.P. Netscape 1995-2005
Sadly, Netscape is no longer a serious contender in the Browser Wars. The AOL takeover crippled it, and NS8 puts the nails in the coffin. Here are the three biggest blunders that led to Netscape's demise:

1) Portal branding. The AOL/Netscape site is the biggest lump of crud I've seen in a long time. Not only is it entirely too crowded, but it actually launches a pop-up that you can't block with the Netscape popup blocker. What kind of tomfoolery is that??

2) The Netscape team failed to capitalize on the important work of the Mozilla team. This is just unforgivable. The new Netscape doesn't accept Firefox themes or extensions, severely limiting its usefulness. Here's a hint, guys: If you're going to release a large piece of software, you might want to enable those things that actually make it work better.

3) They've abandoned non-MS platforms. As if the elimination of themes and extensions wasn't bad enough, the Netscape team entirely snubbed non-MS platforms. This is astonishing to me, as the Mozilla code has already been ported to these other platforms.

Firefox now carries on the legacy of innovation that Netscape once so proudly upheld. It's sad when a once-heroic figure dies, but it's even sadder when no one misses them.
