Symantec files suit to label adware

The unspoken threat

Symantec's pro-active suit is somewhat surprising but welcome all the same. If one checks the security reports, delisting of some of these adware/spyware/malware products is going on due to the anti-spyware product developers being sued by the alleged adware/spyware vendors over poor publicity resulting from having their products identified as adware/spyware/malware. Users of the various anti-spyware products will not be told that any specific product has been delisted so may be trusting that all remains well when using them.

Having specific standards set would be welcome, but, at least in the United States, the existence of such standards would not stop a company from bringing suit against the developer of anti-spyware software. The company might lose such a suit, but the fact is that they can afford the attorney fees to bring the suit. Some of the developers cannot, and therefore cannot risk being sued.

The result of Symantec's suit will be interesting.
