The reason many distros exist and thrive is because they fill a want that customers have. Whether an idea is "better" or not is very personal and differs from person to person.
The fact that it still exists shows that Debian provides something that the consumer wants and doesn't get from other distros. If FreeBSD already provided it, then they will all migrate over to FreeBSD and leave Debian to die.
