It's a matter of skill, OKA "value-add"

I think the assumption among businesses, at least those who actually understand outsourcing, what it's good for and what it isn't, is that if we Americans would just work harder, learn more skills that the foreign workers don't have, then they'll be willing to pay the premium to hire us. From what few quotes I've seen from those in the executive ranks, they think we're too lazy, that we're satisfied with a certain level of education, but beyond that we don't give a crap. They see the Ph.D's coming out of India and China and say, "Well they have more skilled people than we can find here. Let's go there."

When you go to a product store and you see Brand A which is adequate but more expensive than Brand B, which gets better reviews and has a reputation for quality, which one are you going to choose? I'm sure that kind of decision making is going on at some companies, though certainly not all. I think most just see the cheaper labor cost and go bananas for it, kind of like the shoppers at Wal-Mart.
