Couple things about this...
"The fundamental problem is we can't expect the casual, naive user to pay to protect his/her machine."

I agree completely. Protecting the casual user is of the public good. If not provided by Microsoft, it could easily be included in a package offered by one's ISP.

That being said. There are a couple of Free Updating Antivirus applications out there. "AVG Antivirus" and "Antivir" are two I've run across.

As far as driving Symantec and McAfee out of business. I say good. They have done nothing to help perpetuate the problem and only work in their own institutional interests. They're not there to help you clean your system. Their method of using stringscan to find viruses killed a better and more proactive method of monitoring suspicious behavior that was in use in early antivirus days. So now, instead of being able to stop a new virus before it hits, someone has to get infected first. What happens when a virus/trojan doesn't infect enough machines to catch awareness of the big corps? Well it doesn't get found. I used to be proud of my virus record on my computer. A windows user that never did anything to catch a virus. That is until I got hit by a driveby install. Yeah they happen. After that I switched to using FireFox. People site that Firefox has its own security holes and that it isn't much better than IE. Well nobody has ever been driveby attacked when using Firefox. So, now you've the opertunity to put virus' on certain groups of people's computers and, if you're careful, can go undetected by a virus scanner. No windows user can say they aren't infected unless they're never on network.
