Patrick, quality doesn't have to be expensive.

Look at the success of Toyota. Japanese car companies were able to gain a share of the US market when the quality of American cars was poor. They're able to hold and increase that share despite improvements in US marque vehicles because they've continued to make well-designed, reliable vehicles.

So good quality assuring a piece of a naturally growing market is far from impossible, even at low cost.


Voska's point about a self-cleaning coffeemaker is good because it shows a feature devised in response to the way people actually use a product. Though the designer is also going to have to assure the solution is not price prohibitive in the intended market.

Built-in obsolescence was rejected when the concept nearly brought down GM and a few appliance manufacturers.
