your parents probably paid the equivalent of $10,000 for their TV in today's dollars. Companies are not going to put the same quailty into something that will only get them $500 today. And if you only have to buy it once every 20 or so years, their ability to make a profit gets less. And if they can't make a profit, people get fired. As more people get fired, less goods get purchased thus less profit thus more firings. It is a vicious cycle that probably will never end.
