For now though, people, like my dad who is 60
something, uses his computer to the best of his
ability, and it has, thankfully, connected him to
the rest of the world. My nephew, who is 14 is
also grappling with his computer, wrecking the
os, and generally trying to get away with
whatever he can to get around whatever
restrictions we have placed on his system.
These examples have nothing to do with the
war that is being waged over the network.
Unfortunately at the time of it's conception the
internet itself was not designed to withstand
attack. You can do whatever you want to make a
car safe, but if the highway is full of potholes,
you're still in for a bumpy ride.
I think the way that the very infrastructure of
the net is somewhat to blame, with a naive set of
parameters at it's core. At this point there is
no way to even tell what country traffic is
coming from, no "caller id" if you will. The
industry still allows anyone to put a website
with porn, along with kiddie sites.
The web needs to be more segmented, with
channels like tv. Some with unlimited
ports, unlimited content, and drive at your own
risk for those who can deal with it, and some
with limited, targeted, content, moderated
websites, and complete control over what is done.
Microsoft and others could then create
accounts based on usage (tv channels the kids
could watch for instance) since in the near
future streaming media will also be a part of the
equation.
Let's fix the highway, newer more powerful cars
are on their way.
