Do what you can with what you have
Specialized products do not always come with choice of Mac or PC. As a chemist, I bought some very expensive instrumentation - if the software came with windows, that's what it came with. We had to choose from available products which would perform the needed services. That a Mac might have been better didn't matter, if I had to write the software, matching the results of other labs, while avoidiing copyright infringement.
The IT department was dealing with communication and data management for the whole organization, not just one group. In a manufacturing plant, quality and environmental control staff know that regardless of slogans, job one is production.
If IT managers are able to purchase the specific products they need (within budget), that's a good thing. With the compartmentalized budgets seen in many corporations, the purchasing department may be pushed to minimize purchase price, while operations is trying to minimize the production costs. These goals don't always mesh. I found myself frequently in the position that Purchasing would substitute a cheaper vial, saving a few dollars, invalidating a 72 hour run, adding hundreds of dollars, in turn slowing production, costing thousands, and possibly triggerig penalty clauses or even losing customers.
So I ran the instrumenta and IT maintained the computers. Someday companies will have better ways to analyze costs, In the meantime, It remains as I have said, the periferal users responsibility to make the interface work, even if it requires sneaker net.
