Actually, that's not what he said. What he said was:

"They who would give up an *essential* liberty for *temporary* security, deserve neither liberty or security".

That's no small difference. Security always involves some limitation to liberty. Franklin recognized that. The real question isn't whether to sacrifice any liberty for security. The question is: How much? While I certainly think some aspects of the Patriot Act go too far, I think it's folly to say the Department of Homeland Security shouldn't even exist. I don't necessarily think that hunting down video pirates is a great use of the department's time, I don't think the question is lost liberty. You never *had* the right to pirate movies in the first place.
