Fact: military hardware with built in operating system is custom programmed from the ground up. Security through secrecy and the obfuscation inherent in large scale software production by defense contractors.
Fact: the whole MS vs Linux argument is a waste of breath. BOTH are vulnerable. ALL OS's are vulnerable.
Fact: the U.S. military uses COTS (commercial, off the shelf) software which is covered by special government level licensing agreements.
Fact: security arguments aside, a large majority of government employees are NOT computer geeks or hacker wannabees. They want what they are used to. And due to MS market share ownage, what they know is MS. Period.
Fact: you can DOWNLOAD Linux free. Tech support is extra. Word on the street is that it's plenty extra too.
As an end-user, going by my own experience, I prefer Windows over Linux for the every day tasks for which I use a computer. That is, email, websurfing, gaming, word processor and spreadsheet.
Speaking of everyday use, the Windows interface is very polished and user friendly (aesthetically speaking). The Mac is even more-so, and if the gaming support was there, I'd use one for every day use. Nice *nix core and file system there from what I understand.
Then there's Linux. I've tried it. The endless variety pleases early adopters, computer geeks, hackers, and wannabees, but at the same time, it keeps this from being an end-user favorite. Why? If you're a clueless newbie, you don't know which flavor to install. Then there's installation. Some are straightforward, some are not. Picture a clueless newb trying to figure out what to do with a command prompt. No mouse, no pictures, no helpfile. Blink, Blink, Blink goes the cursor. Blink, Blink, reboot to windows goes the newb.
Fine, fine. So you say you have to use Linux to be kewl daddy haxor of the week.
To each his own, YMMV.
