The type of program discussed in the article is a Trojan Horse, meaning it is disguised as a program you would gladly install and use on your computer. The method used to get the user to install it is social engineering or giving the incentive for free software while tricking them into allowing additional software (unwanted) to be installed (ever hear of WeatherBug, read up and find out what parasites are installed with that free software..... gain, gator, bonzai buddy).

The real solution to this is requiring the install package to inform you EVERY time software install packages are launched you Clearly know the name of the software and are given a chance to choose "Do You Want To Install this software?" and not allow the partners software install package just kick off additional software install packages without informing the user what will be installed.
