Do I read the article correctly? That by the middle of this year security updates are no longer accessible to non-genuine software?
The industry is still trying to educate the general public to install virus checks, firewalls and to obtain security updates! Now Microsoft is saying it will not provide security updates! Will MS be comfortable with millions of compromised systems spewing out viruses, DOS attacks, Trojans, etc. at the 'legit' computing community? If the virus developers are smart they'll check for the same WGA imprint - if it exists, burrow. If not, attack.
I agree with notion of limiting 'extra' software downloads - but to put the whole Internet at jeopardy is foolish.

Utter FUD. For what it's worth, patching doesn't necessarily guarantee your system is going to be free of viruses or spyware. Nor is NOT patching your system an open invitation to being compromised. I've seen plenty of XP boxes with SP 2 and the latest patches STILL get infected with both. And yet, my SP 1 box is virus and adware free. Why? Cause the client with the SP2 box has problems resisting social engineering, downloads e-mail and opens attachments from everyone regardless of how obvious it is that it's a virus, visits web sites known to harbor and infect systems with spyware/adware, etc... And of course doesn't run up to date antivirus software on their system.

On the other hand, I resist the temptation to open every (obviously) infected e-mail, visit web sites crawling with spyware. And I keep my AV up to date.

The VAST majority of viruses and spyware rely on social engineering - and stupid humans - to begin the infection by way of social engineering tricks. Most end users who wind up consistently getting infected either don't care, or are greedy enough to get themselves into trouble.

Come on, how many of you guys wanna see Paris Hilton buck nekkid? Or you ladies - how many wanna see say, Brad Pitt in his birthday suit?
