- ?Amateur? admins.. Whose is the amateur?
-
"It will prevent amateur mail admins from running a mail server on their consumer DSL or cablemodem line."
I have a static IP assignment from my ISP, port 25 is open, but blocked by my local firewall for all systems except for my email server. (Open ports 21,25,80, etc was a prerequisite when I considered ISP's.)
I have found the so-called professionally run ISP mail servers to have a very low reliability level. Comcast, Roadrunner, Bell south, etc.. (Lost or delayed emails, DNS problems, routing problems, etc). Their reliability is so low, that I do not recommend that any business be dependant on them. This includes nearly all commercial ISP accounts, you get the worst of the worst from ISP's of any significant size. So, be careful who you call an Amateur.
Second, running your own email server has many advantages. Like being able to poll a local server one a minute (with zero impact on internet access). Which turns an email system into a instant messaging system. (very nice.)
Third, having your own email server allows one to deploy the ultimate spam blocking technique. Unlimited email accounts. You give each organization you deal with, a different email address. I.E.. YI999orgname@yourdomainname.com
YI999 = your initials + random number/string.
orgname = organization name of other party.
If you ever get spam'd from a unique email address, you instantly know who was compromised or sold out. (at which point you decide if you're going to alias the email account to /dev/null)
Fourth, it gives one a legal advantage. I know the logs and records on my email server are accurate. No possibility of fraud, I know who sent the email, the path it took (last hop at least), etc. No need to involve a third party (who may not be keeping any records) for proof in a court of law. - Posted by: thetruth_z Posted on: 05/23/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
