"This is why Linux won't take over on the desktop... simple tasks like executing an attachment are a baffling ordeal."
You say that like it's a bad thing. Reading attachments is entirely different than executing attachments, which is generally a bad thing.
I switched my wife's computer over to Xandros 2.0, what a sweet distro. Install and configuration was a breeze, everything worked out of the box, was even able to get Photoshop working for her on CrossOver. Could even run Word, Excel and PowerPoint if I hadn't replaced that crapware with OpenOffice. It found the network, made it a snap to configure a network printer (even printing a test page), let me set up the admin and user accounts and clicked one button to check for updates. Easy breezy. And she can read her work documents, view pictures, play music and watch video clips that come as attachments without me configuring anything. Email, calendar, reminders, it all just worked. Easiest installation ever, of ANY operating system I've used. When you actually see how fast Linux is improving, you know M$ can't win. They can't move that fast.
The only issue I've had is that for some reason the computer wants to wake up on its own every so often. It's getting something from the home network its reading as wake on lan. That's the biggest "problem" I've had to deal with on that Linux distribution. A small price to pay for no worries about the virus-of-the-day or spyware.
Meanwhile, over at my buddies office, all XP, I spend the first 45 minutes I'm there removing mountains of spyware that slow IE to a crawl on his system. Then one of his friends comes over and plugs in his laptop....ZZZZAP! Blaster worm all around. Sure you can say he should've been running anti-virus software or had his small business network configured differently, but when you have to buy a third party product to keep your machine from being a bug farm, then technically you should have to add the anti-virus software cost to the total cost of the OS package. So tack another 60 bucks a year on top of the cost of XPee. Not to mention the down time.
Oh, yeah, with Xandros I can install it...legally...on all the machines at the house. I'm not going to replace my SUSE box anytime soon, but it's nice to know I could. All that for 90 bucks for the boxed set. - Posted by: Chad_z Posted on: 01/04/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
