- Who am I to let you down?
-
I know it. You're all waiting for some CrAzY
Linux zealot to come in and tout how superior
Linux is versus Windows. Would I do such a
thing?... You bet!!
As the virus/worm problem becomes worse and
worse on Windows, Linux is virtually unaffected.
"Ah, but this is only because Windows is so
popular. Once Linux takes the lead, then you'll
see all the Linux virii." Oh, how wrong that
statement is. Linux will NEVER suffer from
these types of trojan/worms. Let me explain:
In Windows anything ending with a .exe, or .scr,
or .vbs, or .bat, etc, etc are executable
(thanks Bill Gates... You IDIOT!!). All you
have to do is double-click and away you go to
potential system destruction. An uneducated
Windows user (that's 90+%) often doesn't know
the difference between an attached execuable, or
an attached JPEG image. They "double-click" on
stuff in their email all the time and nothing
bad typically happens.
In Linux (and all UNIX) things are different.
An attached file (even if it ends with .exe or
the likes) is not executable. Double-clicking
on a Linux (or Windows) executable file in one's
email on Linux does nothing. To execute an
attachment you would have to save the file to
your disk, and then enable the "executable"
permission on that file, and finally run it.
The same thing applies if you download an
executable off the web, or through P2P, or
anything else. Could someone lauch a malicious
program on Linux unnintentionally? Sure, but
the user would have to consciencely shoot
themselves in the foot. These trivial
trojan/worms do not exist, and will never exist,
on Linux systems.
This is just one minor example of the vast
superiority of Linux security. If you ran
Linux, you wouldn't ever need to pay attention
to these silly alerts. Learn what *real*
freedom is -- convert today if you haven't
already done so.
