"Some privacy groups oppose the introduction of e-passports because the chips wirelessly transmit personal information to special receivers via radio signal. They fear anyone with the right equipment could scan a crowd for Americans, making them targets for attack or surveillance."

Precisely what is going to happen, and has been planned for centuries. The whole point in putting RFID chips in these future passports is so that people can be profiled at a distance and without their knowledge. This way certain undesirables (read: dissenters) can be pre-emptively removed. For all those that may have their doubts, read up on how the police handled the Republican national convention this past summer. It was a police state nightmare. A co-worker of mine was arrested there. Wanna know what his crime was? Actually being in New York City. He was just standing around not protesting a damn thing when suddenly the NYPD used their long nets and scooped up everyone in their path, guilty or not (and no one turned out to be guilty in the first place). These people were then taken to some warehouse where they were held for TWO DAYS without being read their rights of otherwise processed. In other words, TOTALLY ILLEGAL. Now just factor in what these cute little ID cards will give to authorities and your nightmares can take over from there..
