We have choices to make
And I come from the school of not EVERYTHING needs to be computerized. ShadeTree makes an excellent point about all the critical industries and defense that are already on computers. Nooo I do not advocate doing away with computers my business depends on mine without which I would be back on 18 wheelers or worse yet on the public dole. Folks tha use these systems are trained and in instances where the general population enters into the equation (say using Quicken to access ones bank account) a mistake here does not have national implications.

My response to the article is a human response to a basic distrust of the government and the inherent problems of securing computer systems. There is also the issue of voting machines being user friendly. I am sure that they probably are. The "BUT" is Grandma, Grandpa and folks that have 1. never been around a keybord much less a touch screen or 2. are generally intimidated by technology. Can you imagine the time that volunteers will need to spend "teaching" the unwashed masses to vote on these machines. I foresee the questions being raised to rival those raised in Florida. I am in no way implying that the afore mentioned people cannot learn or are too ignorant but I cannot see the confidence level being very high either. The confusion factor is too great a risk to toy with during the election process. EVERYONE can look at a paper ballot or old pull machine, not so in the case of electronic voting. I can also see a greater decline in the voting population for many reasons.

I admit there are many problems associated with paper or machine ballots but people are used to those. Sometimes it is the devil you know that you need to stay with and I think this is one.
