For the good and the worst Brazil's presidential elections are electronic. Each electronic voting machine has a hard disk, a floppy disk and independent battery. The floppy keeps an extra copy of the information on the hard disk. The system is in place for about 6 years. There is no known negative consequence out of this up to now.

Now, if even in contries pioneering in this area, the electronic voting machines are far, far away from the internet, why would we start electronic voting anywhere else through the internet?

Maybe in a million years, when it is safer...

Meanwhile, there are mechanisms to provide electronic voting with all benefits from standardization (butterfly ballots, anyone?) that are more akin to standard voting and more appropriate for a first step.

To suppose we should not have electronic voting because of the internet is discussing too much and too soon.
