I'd be embarassed if the network I ran only authenticated people by a single 9-digit number that can never be changed. Yet, my network has nowhere near the highly-sensitive information one can get simply by lifting someone else's SSN.

There's a newer blog entry on ZDNet about doing away with SSNs altogether for a more secure and difficult-to-break system, and I'm all for it.
