There's an elephant in the room here...
The point that no one seems to realize is that it should not be possible to open credit lines and avail oneself to someone elses financial assets simply by possessing their name, address, and SSN! The notion of checking photo ID is ludicrous, as a simple search of the web for "Novelty Drivers license" will show.

The solution isn't a national ID, nor a national identification database. There are independent, legally entrusted organizations in place already where identity confirmation can take place, while protecting the privacy of individual citizens from feared government abuse.
