The road to dominant VOIP is certainly filled with questions on timing, compatibility, vendors and more.

There is more. For the first time in several generations, basic communications infrastructure is changing completely in 5 to 10 years. The opportunity is to change the models as well as the technology.

One new model that is working is outsourcing the VOIP switching, management, administration and expertise to companies that host and run communications systems.

CallTower recently signed its first Fortune 500 client in the form of a branch office in CA. Thus they can experience Cisco's best VOIP features, fully integrated with Exchange and VXML features to "dip their toes" into VOIP waters without in house expertise, capex or risk.

There is still more. Real Estate and IT are coming together! Think about it: Your office landlord increasingly supplies space heat light security. Every employee gets a cube in that environment and another service group (usually internal) supplies email, phone, voice messaging, internet, blackberries and identification to use all those. Much like heat,light and personnel services, Unified communications are better delivered by specialists who live and die voice, email and communications enhancements.

The world is changing around VOIP and more than you realize. I think it will happen faster than you realize. In 5 years more than 50 % of biz communications will travel VOIP to VOIP.
