There are TWO tyupes of product activation.
You have described the acceptable version, an activation code which accompanies the product and may be used for initial activation or reinstallation WITHOUT contacting the product's supplier.

The SECOND type requires you to contact the supplier and provide much data about your hardware which this supplier has no reason to obtain. This type also monitors your hardware and prevents hardware upgrades without recontacting the supplier.

The FIRST type is generally acceptable.

The SECOND type is SPYWARE.
