Product Activation is unnecessary
It is just one more complexity and possible point of failure. The real culprits are not the people who run their product on their second computer or even those who lend it to a friend. I encounter plenty of people trying to replace a product they 'lent' to their friend. They just end up going out and buying another copy themselves when they end up the source disk again. The industry is using a cannon to shoot a fly.

The real problem is that there are plenty of mass market pirates like the one referrenced in this article, and many if not most people WILL buy from these people IF they have the opportunity. In contrast to the small time casual copier, the mass marketer is easy to target and prosecute and the industry should refocus their efforts on these professionals and not only fine them, but put them behind bars. But by goind after the end user, they are actually making life easier for the pros. Product activation won't stop the pros, it actually makes their lives easier, since all the heat is now on the end users.
