- Weep? No, I have to laugh Jeff
-
Unless you really believe the contradictions and lies, then yes I might shed a tear..... for you.
I don't see how you leap from statements/headlines like; "Compulsary mental health screening is coming"..., or "Frequently asked questions...", to a definite conclusion of an actual outcome.
The articles that you linked to are very cleverly written, and consist of many many speculations and alot of conjecture. Just a few examples:
Yes, this is true. The British Medical Journal (BMJ July 2004) reported that Bush plans to unveil a sweeping mental health initiative that would screen every single American for "mental illness."
And then speculate that Unfortunately, TMAP and similar programs are like conveyor belts, bringing more and more customers to the psychiatric drug industry.
Tell me Jeff, how is it that they claim to know what something is like before it is even implimented? This is called speculation.
Or how about this ...the Texas Medication Algorithm Project is nothing more than a series of flowcharts to standardize the steps taken to treat a vast array of "disorders" ranging from schizophrenia to depression.
Here is their speculation:
"Algorithm" is just a mystifying way to describe those steps to screen everyone, label some, and then place those that are labeled on the most expensive psychiatric drugs first. TMAP is an unscientific cookie cutter method where "one size fits all," and where the drug companies that designed the model can make huge profits, often at the expense of taxpayers and insurance customers.
Now I will speculate, instead of their speculation and let's see which you like. These flowcharts will help your family doctor better diagnose mental illnesses, as their formal training is usually in the field of physical illnesses. This will allow more people, who may otherwise go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, to be treated properly. Treatment might include visiting a psychiatrist, medication or some other form of therapy. While it is true that the powerful drug company lobbies will want their clients to be happy, government regulations will give your family doctor more choices in your healthcare.(I like my speculation better, but it is still speculation)
Another question:
But aren't programs like TMAP and "Teen Screen" good ideas? Don't we want to find out if people have mental and emotional problems, especially young people?
The idea of looking for people who need help sounds great. But too often when it comes to mental health issues, citizens let the experts handle it. It's time to pop the hood and look inside. What does TMAP really do? And who came up with the idea?
Their speculation: TMAP inevitably leads to the most expensive, brand named drugs currently manufactured. Doctors in TMAP are required to prescribe these drugs, or What is questionable and alarming about TMAP is that doctors do not have the leeway to deviate from the treatment model. and they cannot prescribe less expensive, generic drugs unless the patented ones fail to work.
At least where I live, when I visit a doctor, I am paying for his advice and I still choose whether or not to seek a second or third opinion, and have never been forced to take any kind of treatment and always have the option of generic when available. Now you could probably argue different types of health coverage will be different and you'd be right, but I give real life examples, not speculation.
Now, I am not discounting everything in the articles, there is alot of good truth in most of them, but they are full of speculation. I hate the drug companies greedy behaviour too, but the fact that some of these things have been exposed will very likely change the outcome, that's how our system works, and it's not time to leap to conclusions yet.
Another peach: TMAP is not democracy in action; rather it is big business buying a place in American government policy. While this might not be anything new, this is one of the first times a presidential initiative has had the potential to result in the screening of all American citizens for possible psychiatric drugging.
Hey, kind of hard to do if you don't go to a doctor that shackles you in and forces meds on you, isn't it? You, or another poster, referrenced someplace that "required" students to be on medication, yet noone seemed to be able to show any actual law requiring it.
I at least gave you the respect of reading most of the articles that were referrenced in the link you provided, but I just want you to see that there is a whoooole lot of speculation designed to stir up emotions in people in these stories, and you seem to be an emotional guy.
I wish your energies were directed more in the right places (against socialism, or a "New world order" < Democrat ideas), instead of some of the best leaders that this country has had in a while, specifically Bush. I can't possibly respond to every point in those links, but I think I can and have shown a pattern of speculation, and lack of evidence in your articles. - Posted by: Spoon Jabber Posted on: 05/10/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
