I was hacking fingerprint readers years ago
There weren't the libraries available then so we had to do our own checking. Sure they're encryptable but you still start out with the original. And, yes, it is perfectly possible to index information on fingerprints. If it were not possible to get someone's fingerprint without their permission, crime fighting would be set back 150 years! Actually, of all biometrics the fingerprint is the easiest to fake (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1158006,00.asp). Blood vessels in the iris show up on infrared, collapse if removed from the body (ew!) and leave no physical trace afterwards.

It's interesting that you should mention phishing since personal information is a valuable commodity. Give your email address in exchange for jokes in your inbox. Give your address in exchange for goods ordered. Give your SSN in exchange for a credit check. The more personal it is, the more valueable but I'll be damned if I'll give my fingerprint (the only thing that you can't get a new one) in exchange for a slightly more secure mailbox or even bank account.
