The comparison to a book is not correct. To answer your question yes it has. I can now write a play, movie or take the authors work after reading it and use it for some other purpose, which is the heart of open source, being able to have the source to customize and expand on the works. Or for that matter I could use all of his open source code (or his book in this example) as a basis and come out with a sequel, then maybe a prequel that is all mine but based on the original author. So should the original author get paid for my work too?

No open source is great!! Give it to me under a public license and let me have it. Put your program where your typing is, give me your source code and binaries under open source/public licensing!!
