"""What? But, aren't all these service packs the security patches, the anti-virus s/w and the s/w firewalls supposed to make this massive virus/worm spreading a thing of the past? """

Lets start off simple. anti-virus software. It takes any anti-virus software company a little time to find out about a new virus and develope a patch for it. It also requires the user to download the new virus updates somehow. Either automatically or manually. If this isn't done the virus can spread.

Firewalls. With most firewalls, the e-mail package is allowed to access the internet without user input. Now you can (at least in the ones I know) require that you be asked before anything happens. But I don't know anyone who does this. Not saying no one does it just I don't know of any.

Service packs. They may or may not have anything to do with this type of virus but probably not.

Security updates. No matter how many are sent out, a user opening an attachment, then executing a file will defeat them. I don't care how secure the system is, if the user does something stupid, all the safeguards are defeated.

Could something like this spread with Mac or Linux. I don't know for certain but based on the story I would say yes. Would it make the OS bad or less secure? No. it would again fall back on the user. Of course the main person responable is the writer of the virus. They are the ones putting the virus out there. No virus writers no virii. Will that ever happen? I doubt it very much. There will always be people who, for whatever reason, like to cause trouble.
