sounds like you need a little edu-ma-cation (at least on the linux side of the house).
you have to make your virus executable, (i.e. chmod 777 look_ima_virus.xx; ./look_ima_virus.xx). therefore, unlike windows, a downloaded file won't automatically execute.

in linux there is the concept of "root". and if you ain't got root, you cain't (sp) do jack.
hell, you can't even effectively write to your system directories unless you are root. and most linux systems don't allow remote access as root, making it hard to just dump a virus.

therefore your 95% becomes >5% for those who take the time to download a virus program, su to root and manually install it.

maybe linux and osx isn't mainstream because it would be too much work for a windows user to manually intall their own viruses. hmmm...
