It's not the OS....
The OS is at fault only because they start a default installation out as admin and they start you out with a blank password. The average user isn't going to go into the control panel and set up a password. That doesn't even really matter though. Everyone I know is running their machines on a daily basis as admin, so the hacker or virus doesn't even need the admin password because windows allows it to act on their behalf without even giving the user a warning.
That's the only gripe I have with windows. The lack of an excute bit is a bit lame. I remember the first time I had to chmod a file I downloaded I thought, "man, what a friggin pain". 8 years later and a few viruses about 5 years ago and I've learned why this is a great thing. I doubt it would make sense to make a user bust open a shell and type a command in before running a file, but what if they recieved a warning box, and it wouldn't run until they grabbed the properties via right click and had to chnge them there??
Well, they'd do that too because the reason these stupid outdated scripts still work is because they are being tricked by what the text says!! It's the people, not the computers. The only way to fix this email thing is to filter out everything that can execute as attachments and force people and the industry to come up with other ways for folks who need to distribute executable files to do it. I never send out executables as attachments.... Corporate IT needs to lock things down, and home users need to accept the fact that they will have to reload their os every few months or get a basic education on the workings of their machines. Done deal. It's not Microsoft's fault people are lazy. Windows is not that bad of an OS, and I'm tired of hearing all the whining and such. I personally use a mac, and I have a red hat box routing my internet at home, and my wife and kids have a win XP home box. That machine is 5 years old and has never had a virus.
