Common Sense revisited
True, to some extent, not opening up attachments and using (and updating) AV software if you use an OS that virtually demands it, are exactly common sense type actions. That does have to be learned and applied, and if this was still the year 1998, I would completely agree with you.

But in today's world, they have commercials on TV that joke about people getting viruses and worms from reading their emails or not running AV software. Popular sitcoms feature computer problems brought on by user negligence like not backing up, etc. Computers have been an integral part of normal everyday life (at least in developed nations) for the better part of a decade. In the business realm, that extends back even farther. I realize its impossible for everyone who uses a computer to be a guru at it, but in my experience the glaring problem is people like you described. People that use a computer day in and day out, and are too lazy to take care of it properly. It is common sense that you need to use an AV program, and be careful opening up attachments. Its been common sense since before the turn of this century. But there seems to be a growing consensus that common sense shouldn't be followed for whatever reason. That explains the ability of viruses like this to spread beyond a few isolated morons, why middle-school teachers and priests can't stop molesting underage children, and why people continue to drink & drive. Its so simple even little children understand it. The common sense is there, but so is the common apathy.
