Emails should be plain text with no attachments

Here are some reasons why you should use plain text emails...

1. They may not look fancy but they cannot contain misleading hyperlinks. What you see is what you get so it's easier to spot deceptions.

2. Spam filters tend to be more efficient with plain text email.

3. Internet bandwidth requirements for plain text emails is significantly less (e.g. a plain text email may be less than 1000 bytes whereas the equivalent HTML email can be 10+ times the size for exactly the same message). Can you imagine the impact on the Internet of reducing email traffic requirements by 90%?!!!

4. You cannot have scripts in plain text emails that execute on opening so they are considerably safer.

5. People with low bandwidth connections (modems) will hug you and give you presents because you aren't ever going to block their mailbox up.

How you still get the fancy stuff?

1. If you want to send somebody a file, upload it to your web server and give them the link to retrieve it.

2. If you want to give them a fancy promotional, make it a normal webpage and give them the link to view it.

Now, it may not be the answer to every headache but it's a damned good start. Every email client should have the facility to force emails to plain text and to discard all attachments (optional of course).
