And that with a dedicated computer. Not cluster.
Yes, for US$3,000.00 I could build an AMD64 desktop with enough power to do it in less than five years. FOur if I run *NIX. Five if I run WinXP and seven+ if I wait for longhorn to become stable wink.

But for US$200,000.00 I can probably break it within a week or less. Maybe a few hours. Now why would I spend US$200,000.00 to decrypt data? Perhaps if I thought the data may earn me a few million! Identity theft goes well beyond getting paid for spam lists.

Nevertheless, we do not know what kind of data is on these tapes, the capability of the cuplrits, if they were even taken for criminal intent (might have been gross negligence) or how usefull the data is.

The point is that if the gov't requires your data (and your SSN belongs to them, not you) then you always have to live as if your data is in the hands of a criminal element. Eventually it will get there. Fifty years after you are dead, some republican is going to use your name, among others, to elect a president. wink

Let's not go down that thread. I know I stared it but we can just let it go.
