if you never retrieve what is stolen or never find the perps, you'll never know if they managed to breech your security or not.

I do agree that digital rights would provide a second barrier of protection. There are those on both sides of the OS wars who agree that is a necessity. But I still think there is no such thing as digital security that is 100% crack-proof against someone determined enough to decipher it.
