There ought to be a law that requires:

1. All advertising messages, pop-ups, etc. must be "opt in", individually by company. None of this blanket "sharing your information with our associates" allowed.

2. All cookies, downloads, etc. must be individually approved by user, and all downloaded programs, toolbars, etc. must include an uninstall script.
